China Mine Deaths
Tokyo - KUNA

A coal mine explosion killed 11 people in southwest China's Guizhou Province on Thursday, the second deadly coal mine incident in two days in the country, state-run Xinhua News Agency reported.
The accident happened in a coal mine in Songhe Town, local authorities said. When the mine exploded, 19 people were working underground and eight of them managed to survive. The rescue is still ongoing and the cause of the explosion is being investigated. Thursday's mine explosion occurred one day after a coal mine fire killed 26 workers in northeast China.
China has the world's largest and deadliest mining industry casualty rate. Last year, 1,049 miners died in 589 coal mine accidents in the nation, which means the accidents killed almost three people per day, according to the work safety administration. In the US and other developed countries, the annual death toll in coal mines is generally no higher than 40.
