At least 10 people were killed and more than 17 others injured when a bus in which they were travelling fell into a reservoir in the central Indian state of Madhya Pradesh Sunday, a senior police official said.

"The incident took place at Pali village when the bus carrying 32 passengers to Lateri from state capital Bhopal fell in the backwaters of Sanjay Sagar dam after the driver lost control of speeding vehicle while crossing a bridge," he said, on condition of anonymity,

While 10 bodies have been fished out of waters, those injured have been admitted to a nearby hospital by local residents, the official said, adding a probe has been ordered into the incident.

India has one of the world's highest road accidents, with over 130,000 people dying every year, according to official statistics.
