
At least one security personnel and five militants were killed on Saturday morning in an attack at the security forces check post in Pakistan's northwestern tribal region of North Waziristan, once the safe haven of local and foreign militants, local media reported.
According to the reports, the incident took place when a group of around 20 militants stormed a check post in Datta Khel area of the restive tribal region bordering Afghanistan.
The militants attacked the check post with automatic weapons, hand grenades and rockets and killed one security personnel, standing guard outside the check post.
The security forces retaliated by killing five of the assailants while others managed to run away.
The security forces have launched a search operation in the area to track down the attackers.
No group has claimed responsibility for the attack yet.
North Waziristan had been considered as the stronghold of Pakistani Taliban and other militants groups before Pakistan army launched military operation Zarb-e-Azb with ground and Ariel actions.
According to Inter Services Public Relations (ISPR), the mouth piece of Pakistan army, more than 3,200 militants have been killed so far in the military operation that was launched on June 15, 2014 against foreign and local terrorists hiding in North Waziristan.
The operation was launched after a deadly attack at the country 's busiest airport in southern port city of Karachi on June 8, 2014 in which at least 40 people including 10 terrorists were killed.
The Pakistan army claimed to have recaptured and cleared more than 90 percent area of the region and have also destroyed hundreds of hideouts, including bomb making factories and command and control centers of the terrorists.
