UN says 741 people killed in violence across Iraq in April

A total of 741 Iraqis were killed and 1,374 others wounded in acts of terrorism, violence and armed conflicts in April across Iraq, a UN statement said on Sunday.

The statement by the United Nations Assistance Mission for Iraq (UNAMI) said the figures included 410 civilians killed and 973 others wounded, while 331 security members were killed and 401 others wounded.

It said the UN envoy to Iraq and the UNAMI chief Jan Kubis "expressed his deep concern at the incessant violence."

"It pains us to see the continuing bloodletting and loss of life, particularly among civilians who are paying a high price as a result of bombings and the armed clashes," Kubis said.

"Terrorists have used suicide attacks to target cafes, places of worship, pilgrims and markets in a wicked, unrelenting campaign to cause maximum casualties and inflict untold suffering on the population," Kubis added.

A month ago, the toll of casualties in March registered 1,119 people killed and 1,561 others injured in terrorist attacks and violence across the country.

Iraq is currently witnessing a wave of violence since the Islamic State controlled parts of Iraq's northern and western regions in June 2014.
