Tunisian security agents have dismantled several "terrorist" cells, a spokesperson of the Ministry of Interior announced on Tuesday.
During a press conference held on Tuesday afternoon, the spokesperson Mohamed Ali Aroui said the cells in question had plans to impede the 2014 electoral process.
"These groups' main goal is to let the country enter an endless cycle of violence," stated Aroui while presenting photos of the arrested suspects. He said the terrorist plans targeted politicians and vital governmental locations which are related to the upcoming elections.
Fatma Zouaghi, a 20-year-old Tunisian woman, who was in charge of the recruitment for these "terrorist" cells was also arrested.
Some of the suspects are affiliated with Ansar Sharia, an organization that has been classified as a "terrorist" organization by the Tunisian government, while others were from the Brigade of Katibat Okba Ibn Nefaa, which is affiliated with al- Qaeda in Al Maghreb, according to Aroui.
Tunisian Prime Minister Mehdi Jomaa previously stated that there will be heavy security presence before and throughout the legislative elections on Oct. 26, in order to ensure safety of voters and politicians.
