Major Syrian opposition groups have expressed opposition to joining a planned government linking their participation to genuine and tangible democratic reforms.
Munther Khaddam, in charge of the press office of the National Coordination Committee for the Forces of Democratic Change, said in a statement that a recent decision by President Bashar Al-Assad, assigning Dr. Wael Al-Halqi to form a new government "would not change much" of the political situation in Syria.
He said "changing the personality is insignificant; what's significant is altering the manifesto. The committee will only take part in a government based on an explicit salvation program that leads to a genuine democratic system, then we may take part but no to re-producing this regime and others have tried that.
"We may also take part in a national unity government that leads to salvaging the country and a real political solution." The Syrian crisis began some three years ago, when activists and opposition groups held wide-spread demonstrations demanding reforms of the political and administrative systems that had been under heavy control by Baathists for many years. It gradually snowballed into armed warfare's that have claimed more than 170,000 people and created regions under control of various armed groups.
On August 10, President Al-Assad issued a decree asking the incumbent Dr. Wael al-Halqi to form a new government, a move that came in shadow of ongoing fighting in various parts of the country.
Another major opposition group, the National Coordination Body for Democratic Change (of Hassan Abdel Azim), echoed an identical stance. "The re-assignment of Halqi to form a new government is yet a tyrannical move," said Fateh Jamous, a leader of the group, slamming the leadership's failure to consult with the country's various political groups on the government's issue.
