The Syrian army ambushed rebel fighters in the country's southern province of Daraa on Sunday, killing 50 of them, according to the local Sham FM radio.
The Syrian government forces ambushed an array of rebel groups between the towns of Hara and Zamrin in the western countryside of Daraa, the report said, adding that foreign fighters were among the killed rebels.
The troops also confiscated large amounts of weapons and ammunition after the ambush, said the radio, which is close to the government and depends on reliable sources on ground.
Separately, the UK-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said the fighters of the Islamic State (IS) succeeded on Sunday in breaking through the fences of the al-Tabaka airbase in the northern province of al-Raqqa, and seizing large parts of it.
This is the fourth time the IS attempted to storm that facility, which is the last standing stronghold for the Syrian troops in al- Raqqa, which has largely fallen to the IS fighters since a year ago.
Last week, the Syrian troops succeeded in fending off an attack by the IS on the facility, killing as many as 140 of the IS militants.
Further information about the airbase battles is still forthcoming.
The clashes came just weeks after the IS captured two key military positions in al-Raqqa, namely the Brigade 93 and Division 17.
The Islamic State, previously known as the Islamic State in Iraq and the Levant, has recently proclaimed to establish an " Islamic Caliphate" in parts of Syria and Iraq, threatening the political geography in the region.
The group, led by Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi who is said to be commanding over 70,000 fighters, said their goal is to establish an Islamic state in Iraq and Syria instead of shunning aside expanding more into other Arab countries.
The UN Security Council has recently adopted a resolution to choke off the flow of fund and fighters to the militant group.
