
Thousands of Palestinian detainees languishing in Israeli prisons face "disastrous" conditions amid an ongoing cold snap, a Palestinian NGO said Tuesday.
The Palestine Prisoners' Center for Studies has said that Israeli prison authorities do not provide adequate shelter from rain and cold weather inside prison facilities, some of which – like Southern Israel's Negev prison – hold prisoners in tents instead of buildings, World Bulletin reported.
In some other prisons, the NGO added, rainwater leaks through the roofs of jail cells, leaving Palestinian prisoners prone to illness, as Israel refuses to provide supplies like warm clothing and blankets.
The NGO called on humanitarian organizations to intervene to provide prisoners with their basic needs for the winter.
Israel's prison authority has yet to comment on the NGO's statement.
Over 7,000 Palestinians continue to languish in prisons located throughout Israel, according to official Palestinian statistics.
