A reconciliation was clinched among Muslims and Copts in el Naghamish village in the Upper Egypt governorate of Sohag in the presence of security and popular leaderships, the Sohag governor said on Saturday.
A dispute was triggered when people alleged that the Coptic Orthodox church in the village used a building without a license in performing religious rituals. A group of Muslims massed outside the building and set it ablaze, Ayman Abdel Moneim said.
It turned out, however, that the torched building was an abandoned guest house and was not used for any Coptic rituals as claimed, he added.
Those behind this sedition were seized, he added, noting that Muslim and Coptic villagers stressed that what happened is accidental.
