The funeral of teenager Muhammed Sunuqrut on Monday evening in Jerusalem drew hundreds of mourners for the boy killed whe Israeli forces shot him in the head with a rubber-coated bullet. Israeli forces fired tear gas and rubber bullets in clashes from the funeral.
Following funeral prayers at al-Aqsa mosque the procession advanced towards a cemetery by Herod's Gate on Salah al-Din street. At this stage local sources report the Israeli attack on the funeral procession using tear gas canisters and rubber-coated bullets against the crowd, resulting in dozens of Palestinian injuries.
Israeli soldiers are also reported to have stormed the graveyard itself and detained over a dozen civilians in total, amongst them Zaki al-Mahlous, Shaker Nasreddeen, Anis ‘Ayesh and Nidal Sunuqrut.
These actions triggered further widespread protests and clashed in the area and across occupied East Jerusalem.
Anger was compounded by the Israeli police returning the boy's body to his family in the evening, despite haveing promised this would be done much earlier in the day. The Israeli forces still deny shooting Sunuqrut in the head, claiming he was hit in leg by a sponge coated round, fell whilst escaping and struck his head on the ground. Doctors who treated the teenager confirm the rubber-coated bullet struck his head, leading to his death days later.
Sunuqrut's family said they will be filing a lawsuit against the Israeli police for the death of their son.
