An Egyptian court on Wednesday sentenced the son of deposed Islamist president Mohamed Morsi for one year in prison and fined him with 10,000 Egyptian pounds ( about 1,400 U.S. dollars) in the drug taking case.
Presiding Judge of Benha Criminal Court said that the court used utmost degree of mercy towards Morsi's 20-year-old son Abdullah and his friend, because they are students and "due to their young age."
Abdullah and his companion, who got the same sentence, were arrested in early March in Qalioubiya province northern Cairo for allegedly possessing two cigarettes stuffed with hashish.
Morsi himself is currently in custody for trials in a number of charges including ordering the killing of protesters, insulting the judiciary, espionage and jailbreak.
The Muslim Brotherhood-oriented president was overthrown by the military last July after mass protests against his one-year rule. Sisi, now the country's president, led Morsi's removal.
Since Morsi's removal, the new leadership launched a massive security crackdown against his supporters that left more than 1, 000 of them dead and thousands others in custody.
