The Tunisian security forces succeeded in aborting "terrorist operations and plans" after dismantling five terrorist cells and arresting 21 individuals involved, according to Mohamed Ali Aroui, the spokesperson of the Ministry of the Interior, during a press conference on Thursday.
The arrested suspects, who were captured in different suburbs of the capital Tunis, were planning "political assassinations and terrorist attempts" against official institutions, governmental and public buildings, and security targets in the city, Aroui said.
Arms, explosives, night vision tools and car bombs were among the confiscated items found in the possession of the arrested suspects who were planning on using them in their attacks, the spokesman added.
Aroui reiterated the importance of Tunisian security efforts in fighting terrorist activities and preventing potential attacks. He also praised Tunisian intelligence agents for their increasing efficiency and crucial role in fighting terrorism.
