Officials at the United Nations Development Programme
Amman - Arab Today

Officials at the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) applauded the partnership with Kuwait in the humanitarian and developmental work field, and hailed the "generous" support offered by Kuwait to boost developmental plans in developing countries.
In press remarks to KUNA, on the sidelines of celebrating the 50th anniversary of establishing the UNDP held in Amman, late on Tuesday, the UNDP officials applauded the wise instructions of His Highness the Amir Shaikh Sabah Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah for relieving people in need and offering aid to developing countries all over the world.

Representative of UNDP, United Nations Resident and Humanitarian Coordinator in Jordan Edward Kallon described the Kuwaiti support as a "basic pillar" in continuing to host the Syrian refugees in the Syria's neighboring counties.

The partnership between Kuwait and the UNDP is "promising" as the programme is keen on cooperating with Kuwait on that matter, especially regarding the issue of Syrian refugees in the region.

UNDP will soon focus on rehabilitating the infrastructure of areas hosting the Syrian refugees, and offering the appropriate environment to youth and society segments prone to marginalization, besides boosting efforts to prevent spread of terrorism and violence, he said.

Jordan itself hosts more than 1.4 million Syrians, including 630,000 refugees, from which 107,000 live in camps, while the others reside in residential areas, he added.

This requires a group work between governmental and non-governmental organizations to alleviate the negative impact of the Syrian crisis on the hosting countries, he affirmed.

UNDP country Director Zena Ahmed said "success and achievements" by the UNDP could not have seen light without the "generous support" from the donors, namely the State of Kuwait. She expressed pride of the strong ties and remarkable partnership with Kuwait in serving the cause of Syrian refugees and alleviating their suffering.

UNDP Programme Manager Majida Al-Assaf said this celebration is shedding light on the UNDP achievements made in cooperation with its major partners including Kuwait. Cooperation with UNDP partners resulted in many projects which contributed to supporting Jordan in hosting the Syrian refugees since outbreak of the Syrian crisis before around six years, she said. UNDP offered job opportunities and municipal services to affected areas and offered stability to many refugees' families, she added. She expressed appreciation to Kuwait for its continuous support to the UNDP, and its keenness on boosting joint work with international organizations involved in the humanitarian and developmental activities.

UNDP honored Kuwait, being a major partner of the programme and a supporter of its humanitarian and developmental projects all over the world, besides being one of the major donating countries, which supports the Syrian refugees.

Kuwaiti Ambassador to Jordan Dr. Hamad Saleh Al-Duaij received an honor shield during the celebration which was attended by the Jordanian Prime Minister Abdualla Ensour, Kallon, along with senior officials at UNDP,
officials of the Jordanian government, and representatives of donating countries.

Since 1966, the UNDP has been partnering with people at all levels of society to help build nations that can withstand crises and drive and sustain the kind of growth that improves the quality of lives for everyone.

UNDP works in four main areas: poverty reduction and achieving the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs); democratic governance; crisis prevention and recovery; environment and sustainable development
