Kuwait has set aside donations totaling USD 6.4 million to various UN agencies for 2015, it was announced on Monday.
Permanent Delegate to the United Nations Ambassador Mansour Al-Otaibi made the announcement at the UN Pledging Conference for Development Activities.
The donations include USD 2 million to the UN Relief and Works Agency for Palestinian Refugees (UNRWA), USD 1 million to the UN refugee agency (UNHCR), USD 1 million to the Central Emergency Response Fund (CERF), USD 570,000 to the UN Development Programme (UNDP), USD 500,000 to the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria and USD 500,000 to the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR).
Also, USD 354,000 to the Human Settlements Program (UN-HABITAT), USD 200,000 to the International Children's Emergency Fund (UNICEF), USD 200,000 to the UN Environment Programme (UNEP), USD 50,000 to the UN Development Fund for Women (UNIFEM), USD 20,000 to the UN Institute for Training and Research (UNITAR), USD 10,000 to the UN Voluntary Fund for Victims of Torture (UNVFT).
Addressing the conference, Al-Otaibi said that out of strong belief in the crucial importance of the role of UN agencies, Kuwait decided to donate to additional funds and increase its regular donations to others - CERF is an example.
Since 2008, Kuwait has been channeling 10 percent of its donations to developing nations through UN relief agencies, he added.
