Kurdish troops (Peshmarga) on Sunday seized full control of the Mosul Dam from the Islamic State in Iraq and the Levant (ISIL), as American airstrikes continued on ISIL posts.
A Peshmarga official told KUNA that the Kurdish troops had managed to retake Iraq's largest dam from the ISIL after fighting that started at dawn.
The source, that asked not to be named, added that the ISIL fighters fled leaving their dead ones and huge amounts of weapons behind.
Meanwhile, the Peshmarga is preparing for a similar attack over the coming few days to retake the other areas controlled by ISIL in Ninawa Valley and Sinjar, the source said, noting that US airstrikes still target ISIL in the area.
The ISIL fighters have controlled wide areas of the Ninawa Valley since the start of August, after fierce fighting with the Peshmarga which fled the area. Observers believe that the modern weaponry ISIL fighters seized from the Iraqi Army helped them a lot to control these areas.
