Consumer Protection Authority
Muscat - Arab Today

Fines and jail sentences have been handed out to commercial establishments for violating the consumer protection law in A’Dakhiliyah Governorate.

A preliminary court in Wilayat Samael handed out a suspended prison sentence of one month and a fine of OMR300 to a representative of an air conditioning company for breaching the consumer protection law.

A consumer bought a number of central air conditioning units from one of the establishments in the Wilayat, and after installation, several faults were noticed – the air conditioner was not cooling, a water leak from within the unit and a gas leak.

The consumer called the representatives of the company about the issue but no effort was taken to resolve the issue, which pushed the customer to file a complaint and the violator summoned to court.

Meanwhile, a consumer in Wilayat Nizwa filed a complaint against a smithing workshop for breach of contract.

The consumer ordered two large aluminum shades be made to which the time to install and complete the task was agreed before hand with the person responsible to carry out the work.

However, the task was running late and a complaint was filed.

The preliminary court in Wilayat Nizwa, sentenced the violator to three months in jail with a chance for bail at OMR100 if an appeal is made.
