The Anti-Corruption Commission president, Samih Bino, affirmed on Wednesday that the political will to fight corruption in the Kingdom preceded the so-called Arab Spring.
Speaking during a panel discussion organized by the National Building Initiative (Zamzam), Bino said in its fight against corruption, Jordan has already come a long way and stemmed the menace significantly in the public sector.
He pointed out that since 2008, the Commission has dealt with 3,715 cases, of which 543 were referred to the judiciary, and 2,776 were filed either due to lack of evidence or because these were covered by the 2011 General Amnesty Law.
The Commission's head added that the number of complaints it received during the current year reached 785, of which 249 were filed and 198 were under scrutiny, indicating that the body has retrieved JD25 million and a state-owned piece of land over the past year.
The anti-corruption chief also pointed that some corrupt people exploited loopholes in legislation, while there was also the issue of poor performance of watchdogs and lack of accountability in many cases.
