The UAE’s Federal Authority for Nuclear Regulation (FANR), held a national workshop last week on the implementation of nuclear import-export controls in the UAE.
The workshop aims to improve cooperation between the UAE government entities responsible for monitoring and enforcing the UAE trade controls used to achieve the highest standards of nuclear non-proliferation.
During the workshop, FANR officials presented legal and technical aspects of the international nuclear import-export control of nuclear-related and dual-use equipment, materials and technologies highlighted in FANR Regulation 09.
The UAE’s Nuclear Law mandates FANR to regulate the country’s nuclear sector for peaceful purposes, and as part of its efforts to implement that mandate, FANR has issued Regulation 09 on the Export and Import Control of Nuclear Material, Nuclear Related Items and Nuclear Related Dual-Use Items. FANR is the only entity authorised to license nuclear imports, exports, re-exports, transits and trans-shipments of regulated items.
More than 30 representatives from different UAE entities attended the workshop including officials from the Ministry of Defence, National Committee for Goods and Materials Subject to Import and Export Control, Emirates Nuclear Energy Corporation, and the National Emergency, Crisis and Disasters Management Authority.
