Member of the Palestine Liberation Organization’s executive committee Saeb Erekat called on Monday upon the European Union countries to immediately recognize the State of Palestine based on 1967 border and with East Jerusalem as its capital, according to Palestinian WAFA news agency.
Erekat’s statement came as he met with President of the Socialists & Democrats of the European Parliament Gianni Pittella along with the accompanying delegation, where he also underscored the importance of lifting the siege imposed on Gaza, confirming the current ceasefire and insuring the non- recurrence of another Israeli aggression on the strip.
He said the Israeli government utilized the policy of settlement construction, confiscation of land and aggression in order to destroy the two-state solution and the Palestinian national project, adding that the international community should hold Israel accountable and not deal with it as if it were above the law.
The S&D delegation expressed their support of the national consensus government in its pursuit for the reconstruction of the battered Gaza Strip and the provision of all humanitarian assistance to the Palestinian people.
The delegation stressed that a solution to the conflict requires the setting of a timetable for ending the Israeli occupation and establishing an independent Palestinian state, with East Jerusalem as a capital.
