Fatah Central Committee member Azzam al Ahmad
Ramallah - MENA

Fatah Central Committee member Azzam al Ahmad commended Egypt under the leadership of President Abdel Fattah El Sisi for restoring its pivotal role in the Palestinian cause.

He hailed Egypt's success in convincing Hamas to dissolve the administrative committee and allow the Palestinian government to do its work in Gaza, thus paving the ground for a comprehensive national rapprochement.

In statements to MENA on Tuesday, Ahmad said "we were in need for the support of a regional power and we found no option other than Egypt which has a long experience in ending the Palestinian schism and is ready for playing this role."

He added that "Egypt has brilliantly used its tools at the Palestinian, regional and international levels," citing a change in Israel's reaction.

Israel has for the first time stopped threatening the Palestinian Authority as it did when a Palestinian national unity government was formed, he expounded.

He said Egypt must have a hand in such positive change in the US and Israeli stances toward the Palestinian reconciliation.

Al Ahmad said Fatah will offer all needed support to render the Egyptian efforts successful.

He added that Fatah and Hamas would convene in Cairo soon under the aegis of Egypt.

He said Fatah is keen to avoid marring this positive climate and Hamas is adopting that same attitude.
