President Abdel Fattah El Sisi issued on Thursday a decree amending the law regulating Al Azhar and its affiliated bodies' affairs.
Under the amendments, Al Azhar University's faculty members who are involved in protests that hinder the educational process would be sacked.
Also, faculty members involved in inciting violence, rioting, and delivering weapons and explosives into the university's campus would be deposed from their posts.
Students committing any of those violations would be expelled after an internal investigation, according to the amendments.
The move aims at restoring stability at the universities after a surge of violence that overshadowed the current academic year.
