The United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) recently distributed 68,000 ready-to-eat meals to Syrian refugees living in Jordan’s Azraq camp, thanks to a donation from WFP’s partner the Awqaf and Minors Affairs Foundation (AMAF) of Dubai Government through its halal food relief programme, called Salma.

The ready-to-eat meals were dispatched from WFP’s warehouse, located in the International Humanitarian City (IHC) in Dubai, and distributed in February.

"We thank AMAF for their contribution which helped WFP assist Syrian refugees living in Azraq camp," said Abdallah Alwardat, WFP Director in the GCC Region. "This is the first contribution from AMAF through its Salma programme and WFP looks forward furthering our cooperation to provide much-needed assistance to people in need across the globe."

In May 2016, a partnership agreement was signed between WFP and AMAF through which AMAF will support WFP’s food assistance activities to help ensure access to adequate nutritious food to the most vulnerable people in emergencies.

"Our Salma halal relief food programme is dedicated to aiding refugees and those in emergency situations, no matter where they may occur. Our partnership with WFP enables the complex delivery and distribution that makes these donations possible," said Tayeb Al Rais, Secretary-General of AMAF. "We are committed to supporting these and similar programmes in the future."

Through this partnership, Salma will support WFP’s emergency food assistance programmes worldwide with long-life pre-packaged meals that are light and easy to transport.
