Washington - Tap

"In Tunisia, all the conditions of success are provided in view of the credibility enjoyed by the government, the awareness and education of the people, the emancipation of women as well as the existence of a large middle class," said US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton at her meeting Thursday in Blair House in Washington with Interim Prime Minister Béji Caid Essebsi. Mrs. Clinton went on saying that "all these factors are likely to reassure the whole community about the good development of transition to democracy in Tunisia." "Since my recent visit to Tunisia, I have endeavoured to incite the US congress and administration to support the democratic transition process in the country," she declared, pointing out that she was looking forward to the meeting due Friday between US President Barack Obama and Interim Prime Minister Caid Essebsi that is expected to turn notably on bilateral, regional and international issues. Mrs. Clinton also said that the US economic and diplomatic missions that visited Tunisia recently had made "a positive assessment" of the achievements carried out in the country after the revolution. She announced on the occasion that the US State Department will hold a meeting next November 15 with attendance of some 200 US investors to look at means to support Tunisia in this transitional stage. PM Caid Essebsi expressed for his part consideration for the US support to post-revolution Tunisia, affirming that the elections for the constituent assembly next October 23 will be "crowned with success since they will be democratic, free and transparent." The meeting was attended notably by Mr. Jeffrey Feltman, US Assistant Secretary of State for Near-East Affairs and the official delegation accompanying the Prime Minister.
