Cairo - Arab Today

Meeting under Prime Minister Sherif Ismail, the Egyptian Cabinet agreed Wednesday on amending article 10 of the protest law, which had been considered unconstitutional by the Supreme Constitutional Court.

Under the amended article, the interior minister or police chief could file a request with the court of first instance to cancel or change the course or place of a rally, if and only if they receive serious information or evidence that the gathering would pose a threat to public security and that should be before the protest takes place, said Justice Minister Hossam Abdel Rehim in a press conference after the meeting.

The judge should issue a justified decision upon receiving the request, Abdel Rehim said, adding that the protest organizers have the right to challenge the decision.
