A blown out tyre was the cause of a collision between a bus and a trailer truck that claimed the lives of eight people and injured 12 on Wednesday, according to police.

“Initial details of the collision between a trailer truck and an Emirati bus on June 14 indicate that the bus veered to the opposite lane, incoming from Dhofar, due to a burst front left tyre,” the Royal Oman Police said in an online statement.

“The road is level and straight, and is clear of any hurdles or road diversions. The speed limit on the road is set at 120km. The white arrows in the picture (that was tweeted with the statement) show the marks on the road as the bus veered to the opposite lane,” the police said.

Out of the eight victims that died, six were Yemeni nationals, while two were from the UAE, according to a Nizwa Hospital spokesperson.

“Eight have died, and 12 are injured. Out of the 12 injured, four are on level red (critical), and eight are on level yellow (moderate to severe injuries), and 14 have been discharged.”

“The bus was travelling from the UAE to Yemen, and most of the people on board were Yemeni, who were travelling to their country to visit their relatives,” the official from Nizwa Hospital said.

The accident occurred after a trailer truck and bus collided near the Qarn Al Alam Triangle in Oman.

“The accident happened at around 6.30pm on Wednesday and the victims were brought to the hospital after 8pm,” the official added.

The Ministry of Health (MoH) has said that they have activated their emergency response system in the Al Wusta and Al Dhakhiliyah governorates, and added that a hospital in Haima had called for extra medical staff to help deal with the accident.
