The beaches of the province of Boumerdes (50-km east of Algiers) have drawn more than eight million summer holiday-makers since the beginning of the summer season, early June, the head of the province's Civil Protection department said Monday, adding that their number was only three million in July.
"The beaches of Corso, Boumerdes,, Cap Djinet and other campsites have recorded the highest number of holiday-makers," Ahmed Mahmoudi told APS.
He added that many education facilities coming under the province's coast towns are open this summer to accommodate children and scouts.
The great number of summer visitors at the 34 authorized beaches in Boumerdes, according to the source, is due to a number factors, including the high temperatures during this season and the development works done at the beaches, and which has resulted in the improvement of security, accommodation and catering.
The better transportation system is also one of the factors that have led to the high number of people opting for the beaches of Boumerdes this year.
