Works Minister Essam bin Abdullah Khalaf said the Ministry plans to study the construction of a fourth causeway to link between Muharraq and Manama.
The project will be part of the second phase of development of the ring roads around Muharraq.
Minister Khalaf told al-Watan newspaper that the Ministry had obtained approval from the Finance Ministry to begin this study. He said that the causeway which will connect Busaiteen and north Manama is one of the projects funded from the Gulf Development Support.
The second phase of Muharraq ring roads includes the construction of an extension of the first phase of the circular street to begin from Dair Vilalge, reaching Busaiteen district, then the fourth marine causeway to the City of Manama, connecting the Intersection of Northern Manama Causeway, as a multi-lane road in each direction.
The Minister said that 20% of the first phase of Muharraq ring road was accomplished. Construction began last April. This includes developing the Dry Dock Extension's portion confined between Qalali Village, Amwaj, passing through Samaheej, reaching Dair village and Dyar Muharraq, to become a multi-lane road in each direction.
He said that the length of the road now under development is 3 kilometres. The project provides a dual street which reduces the dense traffic on the eastern side of Muharraq island.
In phase one of the project, intersections will be developed between Samahij and Dair vilalges. This linkis Qalali, Samahij and Dair through Muharraq Circular Street and provides new entrances to these villages thus easing entry and exit as well as movement via the roads network of Muharraq.
Statistics pointed out that along the Dry Dock Extension (preparatory phase of the Muharraq ring road ) the average daily traffic rate reaches 40,000 vehicles in either direction per day. However, traffic flow heading to and from the three villages reaches 18,000 vehicles per day.
