The Arab League called for an immediate return to a ceasefire between Israel and Palestinians in Gaza, that was called off earlier Friday, and the resumption of negotiations in respect of the Egypt-brokered initiative.
Secretary General Nabil Al-Araby expressed his utmost anxiety over non-compliance on the extension of the ceasefire, which lasted only three days.
In a statement, he urged that the Egyptian initiative be executed in order to achieve the legitimate demands for the lifting of the Israeli siege on Palestinians in Gaza and to halt their suffering.
The Arab League chief reiterated his call on the need for the UN to offer international protection for the Palestinian people from Israeli rocket fire as quick as possible, in line with the request on such action made by Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas.
The statement added that Al-Araby had discussed efforts to contain the Israeli aggression on Gaza with Egypt's Foreign Minister Sameh Shukry.
