A Malian newspaper has highlighted the efforts that the African Commission has been making in recent months to prevent Morocco’s return to the African Union.

“Morocco, which left the Organization of African Unity (OAU) in 1984 because of the flagrant irregularities (…) is now victim of similar practices to prevent its return,” wrote Friday Malian paper The Independent.

“Despite the support of two-thirds of the member states of the Union, the tendentious treatment of this issue shows that some states, assisted by the Commission, are trying to use all the possible and conceivable subterfuges to block, if not delay, the return of Morocco” to the AU, said the daily in an article entitled “readmission of Morocco to the African Union: the decision referred to the Heads of State Summit.”

It added that “the quorum required for the admission of Morocco to the African Union is 28 member states, according to the terms of article 29 of the charter of the continental organization, which stipulates that the admission is decided by a simple majority of the Member States.”

Despite getting the level of support required (more than two-thirds), the African Union Commission referred the issue to the Heads of State Summit. This unprecedented practice does not correspond in any way to the fundamental texts of the Union, the daily noted.
