
Three fishing boats carrying gunmen who had fired upon an Egyptian navy speedboat in the Mediterranean have been destroyed, and their crews apprehended, during clashes with the navy and air forces combined.
The navy speedboat was carrying out a marine drill in the country's northern waters, some 40 nautical miles north of Damietta Port, in precise, when it came under fire from three fishing boats, a source was quoted by Egypt's state MENA news agency as saying.
Air force and navy units were immediately dispatched to the area in retaliation and managed to rescue the speedboat's crew.
They also managed to destroy the fishing boats after an exchange of gunfire with the crews on board, and apprehended the crews of 20 members altogether.
Currently, a "rescue and evacuation operation" is underway, but no additional information has been provided.
