
Protesters clashed with police in northwest India's Kashmir region Friday following prayers for Eid-al-Fitr, a Muslim holiday that marks the end of Ramadan. More than 19 people were injured in the violent clashes between hundreds of protesters and police in Srinagar, the region's main city, Voice of America reported. Many protesters shouted "We want freedom" and anti-Indian slogans. Authorities said protests also took place in several other cities in the region. Police fired teargas and used batons to disperse protesters, the Kashmir Media Service reported. The Kashmir region is divided between India and Pakistan; local leaders say that peace in the region will not be restored the people of Kashmir are allowed to decide whether they wish to be part of Pakistan or India.
