US likely to continue hostile policy towards Russia under new president

It is highly probable that the United States’ new administration will continue a hostile policy towards Russia and keep its anti-Russian sanctions in place, Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov was quoted by Russian news agency TASS as saying on Tuesday.

He said that the new US president will be known on November 9.

"I don’t want to indulge in speculation but it looks like there will be big difficulties in returning to stable and positive relations between the United States and Russia in the next four-year period," he said. 

"I don’t mean to say it is absolutely excluded. We will spare no effort to tweak the new administration that way."

However "all objective data point that such a scenario is highly improbable," Ryabkov said. 

"We are likely to face a high degree of inertia in the American politics on the Russian track, with a hostile course kept in place. We should be ready for that, including in what concerns the anti-Russian sanctions the Barack Obama administration has imposed, goes on imposing and threatens to impose at the very end of its office term."
