United Nations - ArabToday

The Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK) on Tuesday denounced the United States for bringing Pyongyang's human rights issues to the UN Security Council as a "hideous hostile act."

Ambassador Kim In Ryong, deputy permanent representative of the DPRK to the world organization, reminded reporters that U.S. Ambassador Samantha Power, President Barack Obama's "lackey," brought the "non-existent 'human rights issue' of the DPRK" to the council in an open meeting last Friday.

"The DPRK strongly denounces the anti-DPRK 'human rights' racket conducted again at the UNSC (UN Security Council) as the hideous hostile act infringing the sovereignty of the DPRK," he said at a press conference here. "The U.S. tabled the aforementioned issue for discussion at the UNSC in an illegal manner by mobilizing its vassal forces. This is an outspoken mockery and insult to the UN and its member states."

Pyongyang maintains human rights discussions do not belong on the Security Council's agenda because the body is charged with maintaining peace and security.

The ambassador said that while "there are UN councils different by mandates including the Human Rights Council according to the UN Charter ... the U.S. forcibly brought the 'human rights issue' of the DPRK to the UNSC which does not have any relation to human rights." the ambassador said in a statement read out to reporters."

"The U.S. remains unrivaled in it high-handed and arbitrary practices in disregard to the UN Charter and international law," he said. "The UNSC has turned into a 'comprehensive and all-mighty council' controlled by the U.S.," losing sight of its original mission of maintaining global peace and security."

The United States had maintained the DPRK was neglecting its population's well-being by putting so many resources into its rocket and nuclear development programs -- for which the Security Council imposed sanctions.
