UN provides $10mln to Sudan to assist Syrian refugees

UN High Commission for Refugees (UNHCR) on Wednesday provided 10 million US dollars to Sudan to assist thousands of Syrian refugees in the country, Sudan tribune reported.

The UNHCR representative in Sudan, Mohamed Adar, said the sum has been handed to the Sudan Commission of Refugees to assist around 100,000 Syrians in Sudan, according to the report.

Adar said he met on Wednesday with Sudanese officials on how to assist the Syrian refugees in Sudan in addition to supporting them in cities and their relay on the UNHCR.

In April 2015, Khartoum received an international team representing the UNHCR that discussed with the Sudanese government how to provide assistance to over 100,000 Syrian refugees who fled the war in their country.

Khartoum does not exclude that the number of the Syrian refugees would rise under the continued crisis in Syria.

Sudan earlier said it was hosting around 106,000 Syrian refugees, among two million refugees from other neighboring countries, and providing them with free health and education services.
