UN Deputy High Commissioner for Human Rights Flavia Pansieri praised the Shura Council’s role and its committee on rights and freedoms in caring for the situation of Yemeni prisoners. This came during her meeting on Monday with Speaker of the Council, Abdulrahman Mohamed Ali Othman, and head and members of the committee on rights and public freedoms and civil society organizations in the council. Pansieri voiced her confidence in the Council’s support to the office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights in Yemen, which was established at the request of the Cabinet, and in supporting Yemen’s accession to the other international conventions relating to the protection of human rights and approving the relevant laws. She noted to Yemen’s commitment, despite of the security and economic difficulties it faced during the transitional phase, to submitting the regular reports on the different humanitarian issues. The UN official stressed the importance of ending the national dialogue conference and surpassing the transitional phase and paying attention to the civil, political, social and economic rights, which required the office’s establishment in Yemen. For his part, Othman hailed the establishment of the office in Yemen, which will contribute in spreading the human rights culture in Yemen, confirming that the council and its committees will cooperate with the office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights in Yemen.
