UN holds unofficial session on Aleppo

The UN general assembly is set to hold later on Thursday an unofficial session on the humanitarian situation in Aleppo, Syria, following the UNSC failure to issue a resolution ending the Syrian army's bombardment of the city.

The session, to be held at the request of 70 UN member states including Canada, will be opened by UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon and UN Envoy to Syria Staffan de Mistura, according to Al Arabiya TV channel.

Canada's Permanent Representative to the UN Marc-André Blanchard said the meeting will allow the UN member states to get acquainted with the magnitude of the humanitarian crisis in Syria, which requires an immediate intervention.

The world should now make sure that we are doing our best to reach a ceasefire decision in Syria and urgently provide humanitarian assistance for the Syrian people, he noted. 

Last month, Syrian government forces encircled rebel groups and launched an all-out assault backed by Russia.

Some 2,700 people have been killed or injured in the bombardment since then, according to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights.
