United Nations Special Rapporteur on the right to health Dainius Puras has condemned the direct targeting and continued damage and destruction of medical units, such as hospitals and other healthcare facilities in Syria.
"These incidents amount to war crimes and may constitute crimes against humanity, as well as a violation of the right to health, and those responsible must be brought to justice," he said in a statement today.
"Medical units are being damaged and destroyed in large numbers throughout Syria, revealing what has become a repugnant hallmark of this horrific conflict," he said.
The Special Rapporteur stressed that the intentional deprivation of people’s right to access medical care, goods and services through the destruction of hospitals and other medical facilities "is a clear violation of the right to health."
