Washington - Spa

U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon expressed his sadness Thursday about the violence that occurred at the end of a football match in the Egyptian city of Port Said on Wednesday. A riot broke out when fans invaded the pitch at the conclusion of a match involving top Cairo club al-Ahly and the Port Said club al-Masry. In a statement, Ban said he was "saddened by the death of more than 74 people and the injury of hundreds of others," and he extended his "condolences to the families of those who lost their lives and wishes a speedy recovery to those who were injured." "The secretary-general trusts the government of Egypt will take appropriate measures to respond to this tragic incident with the full cooperation of all concerned," the statement added.
