Russia’s deputy consul in Panama, Yevgeny Manilov, who was attacked and stabbed earlier on Friday and was successfully operated, is recovering from the surgery, a spokesman for the Russian embassy in Panama told Itar-Tass over the phone on Saturday. According to Russian diplomats, Manilov’s health is not at risk and the man is feeling better. Doctors at Panama’s national hospital, where Manilov was operated, say he has no complications after the surgery. So far, he is kept at the intensive therapy ward. The incident occurred on Friday morning near the building in the centre of the capital where the Russian embassy rents offices. When Manilov and another embassy employee were escorting a visitor toward the exit, a young man emerged from crowd and stabbed Manilov in the stomach without saying a word. The attacker tried to escape only to be detained by security staff. Manilov was taken to hospital immediately after the incident, where the doctors said his condition was “medium grave.” He underwent a successful surgery and now his life is not at risk, Russian Ambassador to Panama Alexei Yermakov told Itar-Tass earlier on Saturday.
