South Korea Military: Could Consider New Site for THAAD

South Korea's Defense Ministry said Thursday it will consider a new site in Seongju for the deployment of an advanced U.S. anti-missile system if the provincial government calls for an availability study. 
"If the provincial government (that includes the southern rural county of Seongju) demands an availability study on other sites in Seongju that could host the Terminal High Altitude Area Defense (THAAD) system, efforts will be made to check for an alternative site," the Ministry of Defense said in a statement, cited by state news agency (Yonhap). 
Earlier in the day, President Park Geun-hye said that her government could consider deploying a THAAD battery in a new location within Seongju county, 296 kilometers south of Seoul, rather than the already designated spot, amid strong opposition by residents. 
Seoul and Washington agreed in early July to deploy the THAAD missile defense system and picked Seongju as the host site. 
Park made the remarks during a meeting with 11 lawmakers from Daegu and North Gyeongsang Province, including Rep. Yi Wan-young, who represents Seongju.
