
Security measures have been stepped up in Luxor in southern Egypt after an Islamist attempt to storm the city airport, local media outlets report. According to media reports, the army and the police have been put on alert, additional units of security officers are placed around main infrastructure facilities of the city, first of all near ancient Egyptian monuments and museums visited by foreign tourists. Armored vehicles can be seen in the streets of the city. More soldiers have been brought on the territory of the international airport. Early on Thursday, supporters of deposed President Mohammed Morsi tried to force their way into the airport of Luxor. Dozens of people attacked the gate to the airport building, crashed guard boxes on the parking place. The attack was rebuffed. Law enforcement officials said any unlawful actions against government and private enterprises and attempts to trigger chaos in that tourist city will be harshly suppressed.
