Security in region most important for Poland, Latvia

Security in the region and the survival of the European Union (EU) is most important to both Poland and Latvia, Polish Prime Minister Beata Szydlo said here on Thursday after talks with her Latvian counterpart Maris Kucinskis, according to the Polish Press Agency.

Speaking at a joint press conference, Szydlo said achieving these aims meant "finding such solutions which would be acceptable to all member states and which would further strengthen the EU."

Szydlo noted that security decisions made during the Warsaw NATO summit in July 2016 on the strengthening of the alliance's eastern flank was "satisfying to both countries."

"Security is a priority for both Poland and Latvia," Szydlo said.

Referring to European affairs, Szydlo stressed that it was very important to discuss necessary reforms inside the EU.

According to her, Britain's decision to leave the EU resulted from disappointment with the present functioning of the union. "To avoid further departures, we should begin a debate on necessary changes inside the union to upkeep its coherence," the Polish prime minister said.

Meanwhile, Kucinskis said Poland was a very important partner for Latvia in both the EU and NATO. "Important to us is cooperation in all dimensions, also as regards support for Polish schools and cultural associations in Latvia."

Kucinskis said that while discussing security matters, he stressed that "Poland has an enormous importance for security in the region and is one of our closest partners in NATO."
