Moscow - MENA

The Russian navy will add 40 ships to its fleet this year, including a new missile-launching submarine, the Kremlin said. The Vladimir Monomakh -- he third Borey-class ballistic missile sub to enter service -- will be joined by a diesel-powered Varashavtanka-class boat. The Borey class is designed to carry 16-20 nuclear missiles and has an updated quiet propulsion system. Rear Adm. Viktor Bursuk, the navy's chief procurement officer, told Russia's RIA Novosti news agency three nuclear attack subs and cruiser Admiral Nakhimov would emerge from extensive overhauls and return to sea this summer. The navy will receive a new advanced search-and-rescue ship that can assist both surface vessels and submarines that get into trouble.
