Russia expressed regret over U.S. President Barack Obama's cancellation of his trip to Asia which might have resulted in an Obama-Putin summit on the subject of the Syrian crisis, a spokesperson for Russian Presidency stated on Friday. Moscow regrets that the scheduled meeting between Russian President Vladimir Putin and U.S. President Barack Obama will not take place due to the U.S. President's cancellation decision of his participation in the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) summit, set to be held in Bali, Indonesia next week, Presidential spokesman Dmitry Peskov said in a statement, forwarded by Interfax news agency. At the same time, the Russian leadership understands Obama's motives and will wait for another opportunity to hold the meeting between the two leaders, noted Peskov. Also, the Russian spokesman indicated that Russian-US ties, and international issues, specifically the escalation of the situation in Syria requires holding further meetings on a summit level. President Putin, along with a high-level delegation including Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov, is expected to take part in the APEC summit in Indonesia on October 7th.
