Polls Conflict 2 Weeks Before US Election

With just two weeks to go before the US presidential election the latest public opinion polls show a confused picture of who is in the lead.

    Donald Trump holds a 2-point lead over Hillary Clinton in a poll by the Investor Business Daily. The newspaper has correctly predicted the last three presidential elections.

    Another poll, by the Los Angeles Times and the University of South California, has Trump and Clinton tied at 44 points apiece. But Clinton is way ahead by 12 points in an ABC News poll.

    Both candidates have been buffeted by scandals in recent weeks, making them the most unpopular candidates for the highest office in modern US political history.     The election will come down to a handful of crucial "swing" states, such as Florida, Ohio, Texas and Pennsylvania, which could go either way.

    The US president is not chosen by the national vote but by winning electoral votes in each of the 50 states. Several states, such as New York and California, are solidly Democratic, while others, such as those in the Midwest, are in the Republican column. Who wins the swing states will become the next president of the United States.
