Over 900 criminal cases filed in Myanmar's Yangon in 20 days

Over 900 criminal cases have been filed in Myanmar's Yangon by the region police in 20 days as part of the 100-day campaign to crack down on crime to ensure safety and rule of law, official media reported Sunday.

The criminal cases include 171 counts of possession, 96 counts of gambling and 189 counts of alcohol excise.

In the 100-day campaign which started on May 1, the police strength used in the crackdown was increased from 50 percent to 70 percent of the total of 5,780 police officers, according to officiating Police Brig-Gen Win Naing.

Yangon Region Chief Minister U Phyo Min Thein pledged to provide the police force with modern equipment, saying that the criminal gangs are posing a threat to the rule of law.

Meanwhile, Myanmar's Mandalay regional authorities have also ordered a crackdown on narcotics and gambling in the region including Mandalay and Pyin Oo Lwin cities as part of the new government's 100-day initiative since taking office.

Daily arrest against perpetrators of narcotics trading and gambling activities are being made, said Mandalay Police Chief Han Htun.

The Mandalay crackdown will last until Aug. 8, according to the authorities.
