The Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE) will increase the number of its monitors in Ukraine, its Chairperson-in-Office Sebastian Kurz was cited Thursday by local media as saying.

Speaking at a meeting of the United Nations Security Council, Kurz said that the technical equipment of the international observers working in Ukraine will be improved, while operating hours will be extended to prevent a worsening of the situation in the conflict zone in eastern regions.

Currently, more than 700 unarmed OSCE observers are deployed in Ukraine, with the majority of them monitoring the ceasefire between government troops and pro-independence insurgents.

"It is necessary to improve the living conditions of the local population, especially along the line of contact. In this regard, it is essential to ensure unhindered humanitarian access to people in need," Kurz added.

The OSCE sent its special observer mission to Ukraine in March 2014, following a request of the Ukrainian government. In February 2016, the mandate of the mission was extended until March 31, 2017, with a possibility of further extension if needed.
