Obama Warns against Prejudging Trump

US President Barack Obama warned against prejudging his successor, president-elect Donald Trump, during a townhall meeting at the sidelines of the Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) summit, where leaders expressed concern on Saturday. 
Obama's speech to about 1,000 young people, his last address to a public audience abroad, came as uncertainty about Trump's promised protectionist economic policies emerged as the dominant topic at the summit with leaders from all 21 APEC countries in attendance, according to the German press agency (dpa). 
"Give this new president-elect a chance... As I've always said, how you campaign is not always the same as how you govern," Obama said. 
Obama added that he doesn't foresee big changes to US foreign policy towards Latin America. 
At the sidelines of the APEC summit on Saturday, Obama met with the leaders of 11 countries that had signed on to the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) trade agreement with the US. 
Obama commended those countries that had already moved toward ratifying the agreement and urged leaders to continue to support TPP. 
Some had hoped the meeting would have been used to save the TPP trade deal, which had been negotiated by Obama's government, but was rejected by Trump. 
The agreement now appears dead, with no ratification effort expected in the US Congress before the end of the year, and Trump taking office January 20. 
During Obama's trip, expected to be the last foreign journey of his eight-year administration, he is expected to hold meetings on the weekend with leaders from some of the 21 countries in attendance. Those represent nearly 40% of the world population and 56% of the global economy.
