North Korean leader Kim Jong Un provided field guidance during a test firing of a surface-to-air guided weapon, according to KCNA.
Pyongyang's state media news agency reported that Kim was present during the test of a "new" missile, which was being evaluated for combat performance.
This is the first time in eight days the North Korean leader has attended a military-related event, Yonhap reported.
Earlier in the week, Kim had visited what appeared to be an upscale department store while state media warned the country a second famine was threatening people's livelihoods.
On Saturday, KCNA stated the military evaluation was a "confirmation that the performance of the new anti-aircraft missile systems completely meets the latest technology requirements".
Pyongyang stated Kim expressed his appreciation for the scientists and technicians of the National Defense Science Division, and in attendance was Ri Man Gon, deputy head of Pyongyang's munitions industry, Ri Byong Chol, first deputy of the Party Central Committee and other senior North Korean officials.
North Korea has increased provocations since the adoption of a tough United Nations Security Council sanctions resolution in March.
The country launched another short-range missile on Friday, Seoul officials said.
South Korea's joint chiefs of staff stated the projectile was fired about 12:45 p.m., Friday. The object was launched from near the North Korean city of Sondok, in South Hamgyong Province and likely fell into the East Sea, also known as the Sea of Japan, after traveling for about 60 miles.
Other preparations are underway ahead of North Korea's Seventh Party Congress, to be held in May.
