Tehran - Arabstoday

With vote counting complete in more than 90 percent of the constituencies, over 200 Majlis hopefuls have won enough votes to secure seats in the Iranian parliament. According to Iran’s Interior Minister Mostafa Mohammad-Najjar, vote counting is still underway in Tehran with two Principlist candidates, Gholam-Ali Haddad Adel and Mohammad Hassan Aboutorabi leading the 60-member candidate list. The Election Headquarters, which is affiliated to Iran's Interior Ministry, announced that in 30 constituencies, the candidates with the highest vote count but less than 50 percent of cast votes would have to participate in a run-off vote. Early vote count results show that more than 64 percent of eligible voters have cast ballots in Iran’s parliamentary election, with 75 percent of the candidates from the Principlist camp securing Majlis seats. The turnout in the previous parliamentary elections was 51 percent. Over 48 million Iranian citizens were eligible to vote in the ninth parliamentary election with 3.9 million first time voters. Voter turnout in Tehran was reported at 48 percent.
